Welcome to the Canberra Outrigger Canoe Club...

Outrigger canoe racing is one of the fastest growing water sports in the world, attracting a high calibre of athletes from a variety of other water sports. It is a challenging sport which encourages teamwork, fitness and fun.

Originating in the Pacific rim some 30,000 years ago, it played an integral role in ancient cultures. It became a competitive sport in 1917 with the first known race being held in the Hawaiian Islands.

In Australia the first club was formed in 1978 on the Gold Coast. Since then the sport has spread Australia wide with clubs in most states, including the ACT.

The Canberra Outrigger Canoe Club was founded in 2000, becoming the first lake based Australian Club. It has grown to become a competitive sporting team which successfully races in interstate outrigger events.

Outrigger canoeing is a fantastic way to keep fit without the need for a gym.

Introduction to Outrigger Canoeing – 5 session course...

Outrigger canoe racing is one of the fastest growing water sports in the world, attracting a high calibre of athletes from a variety of other water sports. It is a challenging sport which encourages teamwork, fitness and fun.

Outrigger Canoeing is an ocean sport (although we train on Lake Burley Griffin) and the Canberra Outrigger Canoe Club competes with the southern NSW coast clubs in regatta’s held every month or so.

The next Novice session runs from Tuesday 11 March to Tues 1 April (plus Saturday 4 April).  The Novice course will familiarise you with all aspects of the sport, including its cultural history in the Pacific, the paddling technique and drills for increasing paddle fitness and teamwork.  Each session aims to improve the paddling technique, fitness and overall knowledge to a level which will allow easy integration with our experienced crews.  Once completing the course, we invite you to join the club and train with a crew in any of the five weekly sessions.

For more information about the Novice course, contact Kirsty Mackay (details below).

Numbers are limited to seat availability in the boat, so grab a friend and register today.
