Hartley Lifecare Ability Cycle
Challenge
Hartley
Lifecare's flagship charity event, the Ability Cycle Challenge, now in
its eigth year, is held over the last weekend in November to coincide
with the International Day for People with a Disability.
The Hartley Challenge is a bicycle ride from Canberra to
Charlotte's
Pass and return over three days, some 450kms.
This
fun, "ability" focussed event aims to raise significant
funding to
support the work Hartley Lifecare provides for people and their
families living with severe and complex physical disabilities from
within the ACT and surrounding regions. Hartley Lifecare is a unique
and specialised disability service focused on making a difference for
people with disabilities through providing year round 24 hour
specialised residential and respite options for children and adults
living with a physical and complex disability in Canberra and the
surrounding region.
The event was
first staged in 1999, with 10 riders who raised $10,000. The event has
grown significantly to produce the result in 2005, 270 riders raising
$352,000 and close to $500,000 in 2006. The event is supported by major
corporate businesses and
organisations.
Canberra Outriggers entered team in the
Challenge in 2006. The Hartley Challenge
involves a team of at least six riders and two support crew. At least
two of the
six riders must be on the road at any time.
