Welcome
to
the Canberra Outrigger Canoe Club...
Outrigger canoe racing is one of
the
fastest growing water sports in the world, attracting a high calibre of
athletes from a variety of other water sports. It is a challenging
sport which encourages teamwork, fitness and fun.
Originating
in the Pacific rim some 30,000 years ago, it played an integral role in
ancient cultures. It became a competitive sport in 1917 with the first
known race being held in the Hawaiian Islands.
In
Australia the first club was formed in 1978 on the Gold Coast. Since
then the sport has spread Australia wide with clubs in most states,
including the ACT.
The Canberra
Outrigger Canoe Club was founded in 2000, becoming the first lake based
Australian Club. It has grown to become a competitive sporting team
which successfully
races in interstate outrigger events.
Outrigger canoeing
is a fantastic way to
keep fit without the need for a gym.
